Is It Time For A Detox Cleanse?
Everyone wants to detox these days, especially around and after the holidays. And it seems like there are more and more crazy detox diets every time you turn around.
It’s hard to know which one to choose, or where to place your faith.
One of the wildest ones I’ve heard of is the lemon detox diet. It’s become quite popular with entertainers and other movers and shakers who need to drop weight quickly for a movie or musical tour.
I’ve even heard of some brides who have adopted this diet in an effort to shed pounds before the big day.
This is an all liquid diet that’s designed to let you drop weight quickly while flushing toxins and other poisons from your body at the same time.
It’s supposed to run for 10 days, and during those 10 days no solid food is allowed. If you like salt water, and lots of it, for breakfast, then this might just be the weight loss regimen you’ve been looking for!
You’ll also get plenty of lemon water, 6- 12 glasses per day. It’s not really lemonade, but a concoction of lemon, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water.
Oh, and I saved the best for last. At the end of the day you get to drink a cup of laxative tea!
I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t sound too appetizing to me.
Yet some people swear by this, and I suppose if you give up solid foods for 10 days you’ll naturally drop some pounds.
Full disclosure, I have tried all kinds of diets, but I have not tried the Lemonade Detox.
So who is this diet really for? And don’t you hate that word anyway?
I think all of us would do much better to refer to any time we try to lose weight as a “lifestyle change” instead of the newest, most popular fad.
I suppose if you have to lose weight fast, this diet will probably work for you to accomplish that.
I just wonder what the long term effects will be. Some folks go beyond the 10 days and actually do as much as 45 days on this 650 calorie diet. How they accomplish this, I have no idea, because that seems rather extreme to me.
So while I have no doubt you’ll lose weight while on this diet, I can’t believe it would be much more than water weight and maybe even some muscle. I find it hard to believe that you’d lose much fat, or that you wouldn’t put the weight right back on once you begin eating solid food again.
And I can imagine it would wreak havoc on your metabolism as well.
The way to wean yourself off this program is to begin slowly eating solids foods again, like soup and fruits and fruit juices.
Be aware that there are several variations of this diet in circulation, all with subtle differences.
There are a number of detox symptoms that you may experience while on this diet, including fatigue, irritability, nausea, and cravings for solid food, just to name a few. Supporters of the program insist these symptoms are just your body purging itself of unwanted toxins and chemicals, but the jury is still out on that.
You must make certain you are in good health before you embark on any radical change in diet or exercise, and it would be wise to schedule some time with your doctor to let him or her know what your plans are. I’m sure they would have some input and maybe some more specific recommendations for you.
Please also be aware that you may be setting yourself up for some imbalances and deficiencies, because you won’t be getting the proper recommended amounts of daily vitamins and nutrients.
You may end up damaging your immune system by starving your body as well.
Whether or not it’s worth it to you to lose weight rapidly is something you’ll have to decide for yourself.
My personal opinion is that it’s much better to take of weight gradually and sensibly, using methods that have been proven to work by making sure your body gets all the proper nutrition it needs.
